Hoosiers headed to the College Cup

Spoke briefly by text with Tom Morris tonight, after IU's big win. A lot of players credited him and sent wishes along to him on Twitter, and he wss at Indiana's second-round win against Xavier. Here's what he passed along to me tonight:

"Super proud of our guys. From the first day they reported to camp, they showed up with focus and determination. Every day, they worked incredibly hard in the pursuit of perfection. They have bonded as a team and are playing incredible soccer. So proud of there fight and overall toughness. Congratulations to the coaching staff and team. Go Hoosiers!!"

Thought you all would like that.

Eriq Zavaleta’s 18th goal of the season was all Indiana needed to push into its first College Cup since 2004, one of the nation’s premiere programs returning to its sport’s biggest stage for the first time in almost a decade.

Indiana, the No. 16 seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament, did it the hard way, defeating No. 1 Notre Dame 2-1 in overtime last weekend. Road warriors once more, the Hoosiers defeated No. 9 North Carolina 1-0 thanks to Zavaleta’s second-half goal in the 59th minute.

North Carolina had posted 40 straight wins at home before the Hoosiers' victory Friday night.

The Hoosiers finished with six shots to North Carolina’s 13, as the Tar Heels piled up attempts in the game’s final minutes, pressing for an equalizer. will have more on this story.
