This weekend’s Spiece Run-N-Slam tournament will be loaded with some of the nation’s top prospects, including Jabari Parker and Jaquan Lyle. It will also have, as always, a distinct IU flavor, with several commitments and recruits playing in the event.
InsideIndiana.com and 247Sports will be out in force for the event. Here’s a look at when IU prospects will participate in pool play:
CLASS OF 2013
Michigan Mustangs
Monte Morris
Friday, 10:30 p.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 7
Saturday, 8 a.m. — Concordia High School, Court 21
Saturday, 12:30 p.m. — Canterbury, Court 12
Morris excelled last weekend at the adidas Spring Classic, and he will have backcourt mate Derrick Walton returned to the lineup for Spiece. Morris visits IU on Friday before heading to Fort Wayne.
Mac Irvin Fire
Jabari Parker, Russell Woods
Friday, 10:30 p.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 1
Saturday, 9:30 a.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 5
Saturday, 12:30 p.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 1
Woods is moreso the IU target than Parker, but you can’t mention Mac Irvin Fire without pointing out that they have the nation’s top player in 2013. That third game, at lunchtime Saturday, ought to be really fun, as it will be against Trey Lyles’ Spiece Indy Heat team.
The Family
E.C. Matthews, Wes Clark
Friday, 10:30 p.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 2
Saturday, 8 a.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 1
Saturday, 12:30 p.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 2
Matthews and Clark are both Michigan prospects that are relatively new on Indiana’s radar. Both are talented guards with upside. Matthews just grabbed an offer from Iowa.
CLASS OF 2014
Spiece Indy Heat 17U
Trey Lyles, Trevon Bluiett, JaQuan Lyle
Friday, 7:30 p.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 1
Saturday, 9:30 a.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 1
Saturday, 12:30 p.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 1
This will be Spiece’s first local tournament of the spring, after competing in EYBL events in Minnesota and Virginia to start its schedule. Lyles will be looking to translate an excellent high school season into AAU play, and Bluiett could be thinking about a decision soon.
Eric Gordon All-Stars
Bryant McIntosh, Sean Sellers, Sam Logwood, Josh McRoberts, Jacob Johnson
Friday, 9 p.m. — Northrop, Court 14
Saturday, 9:30 a.m. — South Side High School, Court 30
Saturday, 2 p.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 3
It’s already been a successful summer for this bunch, with several players’ individual stock rising during the evaluation period.
Meanstreets-Wilburn
Drake Harris, Tyler Wideman
Friday, 9 p.m. — Carroll High School, Court 38
Saturday, 8 a.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 4
Saturday, 2 p.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 3
Harris and Wideman have both been on the IU radar for some time. It will be interesting to see how each has improved since impressing throughout last summer.
Illinois Wolves
Malek Harris
Friday, 10:30 p.m. — Carroll High School, Court 24
Saturday, 9:30 a.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 4
Saturday, 2 p.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 2
Harris’ is a name to keep in mind in 2014, as his IU interest is relatively fresh.
CLASS OF 2015, 2016
Eric Gordon Central Stars
Eron Gordon (2016), Brennan Gillis, Michael Benkert
Friday, 10:30 p.m. — Wayne High School Auxiliary, Court 18
Saturday, 11 a.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 2
Saturday, 3:30 p.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 1
Eron Gordon is the headliner in this group certainly, but it was Gillis who took home MVP honors at a tournament in Atlanta last weekend. Take a look at Gillis, a still-developing power forward from Ben Davis. He’s already got good strength, and polish is still coming to his all-around game.
Spiece Indy Heat-Reamer
Bronson Kessinger, Gary Bonds, KJ Walton
Friday, 7:30 p.m. — Carroll High School, Court 22
Saturday, 11 a.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 6
Saturday, 3:30 p.m. — Spiece Fieldhouse, Court 3
This group impressed in Indianapolis at the IndyBall.com Shootout. Bonds in particular stood out, putting together impressive scoring numbers. Will his stock have risen since the evaluation period?
Indiana Elite Team Indiana
Chandler White, Hyron Edwards, Sean McGee, Everitt Duncan, Stanley Duncan
Friday, 9 p.m. — North Side High School, Court 29
Saturday, 11 a.m. — Snider High School, Court 16
Saturday, 3:30 p.m. — Wayne High School Auxiliary, Court 18
Make it three trophies in three tournaments for this group, which is loaded with young, talented guards. Can Mark Adams’ crew make it four in a row? And how will White’s and Edwards’ recruitments develop from here?
Meanstreets-Buggs
Trevor Manuel, Ryan Fazekas
Friday, 9 p.m. — North Side High School, Court 27
Saturday, 11 a.m. — Indiana Tech, Court 17
Saturday, 3:30 p.m. — Snider High School, Court 15
Both Manuel and Fazekas have distinct IU interest, even for their age. Fazekas in particular is intriguing. A 2015 wing from Michigan City (Ind.) Marquette, he is a capable scorer and a good jump shooter for his size (6-foot-7).
Spiece Indy Heat-Lands
Jalen Coleman, Jaraan Lands
Friday, 9 p.m. — Canterbury High School, Court 12
Saturday, 9:30 a.m. — Saint Francis North, Court 13
Saturday, 2 p.m. — Saint Francis North, Court 13
Coleman made the switch this summer to play with Jaraan Lands, but it’s certainly not going to slow his recruitment. He’s in a solid pool, with a Michigan Mustangs squad to match up against on Saturday.
Spiece Indy Heat-Quarles
Vijay Blackmon
Friday, 7:30 p.m. — Wayne High School, Court 34
Saturday, 8 a.m. — Wayne High School, Court 34
Saturday, 12:30 p.m. — Wayne High School, Court 34
The younger brother of James Blackmon, Vijay Blackmon is actually a Class of 2016 prospect. He’s quite talented for his age, not unlike Eron Gordon, and he’s certainly a prospect to keep in mind in that class, even this early on.
