Column: Defense an offseason focus

Purdue 56, Indiana 35

Greg Heban (behind) and Mark Murphy (left) will anchor a defensive secondary that, as with IU's defense at large, must improve in the offseason.

WEST LAFAYETTE — Just as it did in September — and October — Indiana confronted a familiar obstacle to growth in West Lafayette on the final afternoon of the 2012 season.

    • Our guys don't tackle they just bounce off..down linemen get no penetration. No pass rush unless we blitz. LB's can't get off blocks and have no speed to cover the TE's or RB's coming out of the backfield..CB's can't cover one on one..poor technique like Murphy twice in open filed trying to take down a much bigger player by going in high rather at the legs..basic dumb stuff. Had it not been for about two dozen of Greg Heban's desperation tackles during the season..the Hoosiers will given up a hell of a lot more points. Either the coaches schemes are bad..the players don't understand them..or the talent is just not there to execute them. The latter is now a given.

    • For a team that was composed of nearly 75 % Freshmen & Sophomores, I thought Coach Wilson & staff did a great job of coaxing 4 wins & 4 losses by a total of 10 points out of such a young team. I love the way recruiting is going for next season, thus far !!!
