INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – It’s playoff time in Indiana which generally means it’s Cathedral time in the Hoosier State.
Cathedral 2014 WR Terry McLaurin is also dynamic in the return game, scoring two TDs receiving and one via punt return in the regional championship win.
247Sports was on hand for the Fighting Irish’s 41-7 regional championship victory over a Mt. Vernon team that came in at 11-1. Cathedral is two games away from winning a third-straight Class 4-A state championship, and improved to 8-5 playing against one of the nation’s toughest schedules.
Stars Of The Game
The junior class is deep with talented receivers in the state of Indiana and Terry McLaurin proved he’s as big a playmaker as some of the more touted guys on Friday night. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound McLaurin had scoring receptions of 38 yards and 28 yards, and he showed his explosiveness on an 89-yard punt return for a score. McLaurin has 10 receiving scores on the year and should see his recruiting stock rise.
Cathedral had to be fundamentally sound and play assignment football against Mt. Vernon’s misdirection and option rushing attack, and led by Ball State linebacker commit Stu Stanley, the Fighting Irish were able to consistently get off the field defensively. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Stanley played sideline to sideline, was a sure tackler, and also provides a little thump when he gets to the ball carrier. Stanley had a couple tackles come in the Mt. Vernon backfield. Stanley looks like a safety/linebacker player for the Cardinals on the next level.
Cathedral Continues To Produce In The Trenches
Air Force center commit Colin Sandor is a quick interior lineman that will be perfect for what the Falcons in their offense. He’s been big for Cathedral the last two seasons.
Tough to be an impact player as a sophomore at a program like Cathedral, especially on the offensive line, but Jared Thomas has come in and had a big year for the Fighting Irish. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Thomas is athletic, has good feet and long arms. Delivers good punch and moves well laterally. If he continues to develop, Thomas has a chance to be one of the more heavily recruited players in the state in the class-of-2015.
News & Notes
Receiver Sampson Levingston is a put together 6-0, 200-pound receiver that runs smooth routes and has strong hands. He’s also a willing and capable blocker. Levingston caught three passes for 68 yards in this win. He has an offer from Indiana State.
Junior Kyle Loechel (6-2, 225) is an aggressive linebacker that can also put his hand in the dirt and make plays off the edge.
Cathedral’s steady senior running back Gino Gillum (5-8, 170) rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns.
