Yogi Ferrell (left) and Cody Zeller (right) both feature prominently in The Sporting News' preseason honors, Ferrell as a freshman All-American and Zeller as a first-team All-American and preseason player of the year.
Yogi Ferrell has been named a preseason freshman All-American by The Sporting News, and teammate Cody Zeller is on the publication’s All-America first team. Zeller is The Sporting News preseason player of the year.
Zeller was Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2012, according to the coaches, and second-team All-Big Ten after averaging 15.6 points and 6.6 rebounds in his rookie campaign. His field-goal percentage mark (62.3) was tops in on his team and fourth in the nation.
Ferrell, a McDonald’s All-American in 2012, came out of Park Tudor in Indianapolis as the No. 1 player in the state of Indiana, according to 247Sports. He was the class of 2012’s No. 2 point guard and No. 14 overall prospect. He set a 2A state title game record with 12 assists in the Panthers’ championship victory in March, their second in as many seasons.
About Ferrell in particular, The Sporting News offered the following: “Ferrell is a smooth playmaker who is the primary distributor for a team with tremendous offensive talent; that’s a good combination for the Hoosiers.”
IU coach Tom Crean said recently that he expects Ferrell, a one-time AAU teammate and good friend of Zeller, to be in the mix for a starting spot this season at IU.
Basketball Times has ranked Indiana No. 1 overall in the preseason, according to WDRB sports journalist Rick Bozich.
