Big Ten transfer rule change

  • Interesting and fast from the Big Ten office, this.

Essentially, the old rule said a player could not transfer from one conference school to another and immediately receive aid. If he wanted to do that, he would have to pay his own way for a year. In other words if, say, Cody Zeller wanted to transfer to Northwestern (obviously he doesn't, this is just an example), then he would have to pay his own way for a year, before Northwestern could put him on scholarship.

The new rule takes that penalty away, but requires one year of eligibility be sacrificed. So under the same example, Cody Zeller would be allowed to be put on scholarship by Northwestern, but instead of his three years of playing eligibility remaining, he would only have two.

He would still have to sit out a year, as is required of all transfers. That hasn't changed.

Link to Andy Katz's story below. Interesting stuff.

Doubt many kids would sacrifice 1 year of eligibility to stay on conference. Coaches will still not allow kid to transfer in conference. Bo Ryan has taken a lot of heat for his BS this week.
