One of those kids where you're bummed you don't get him but kind of relieved you didn't.
I thought this would be drawn out more, but, I'm not going to lose sleep over it. Would've been ok with his commitment and we'll survive without him.
"I'm looking for people who understand why we wear the candy striped pants, why it says Indiana on the front,& what that stands for" T. Crean
4 years ago IU had a recruiting class of 2. I would love to see CTC get the same talent and effort from the kids he is targeting today that he did from those 2 kids 4 years ago. Vic and Will, both of which were obviously very undervalued prospects.
We don't need 4 or 5 kids to make a class great. Yes, it does stink that we missed on Pinson, a Carolina kid. I don't think CTC missed on Lyle, TL's dad was the issue there. As for JL, IU may have actually dodged a bullet there. Great player, questionable character. I hope he turns out to be a great young man and a stud on the court, but I am glad it is LVille taking that chance and not IU.
Blackmon is becoming the stud we all hoped he would be 3 years ago. It is hard to turn my nose up when we are bringing in a top 50 kid.
I still think Exum comes to IU for 1 year to add some mass to his frame. If he does, that is 2 top 50 kids in one class. That is pretty solid and imo, far from disappointing.
There are still some other studs out there giving strong consideration to IU, I don't think we will see the cupboard bare for a long long time.

Might be fun to revisit this thread in the future...
I am the "jackwad", coo coo kachoo!!
One can only hope.
"Coming home, It's Indiana"
I hear you and you are certainly in a better position than I am to know that. I felt the same way for a very long time. I've just heard, as of yesterday, from a regional reporter as well as a few guys closer than I can claim to be to the situation that Tenn. made a sig. gain after his visit. Following this recruitment, that may mean nothing. A lot of the flavor of the week with this recruitment
They definitely did, and honestly, if I didn't think location was such a big factor, I would have given Tennessee a lot more of a shot. But I'm just not sure he was ever going to stray too far from home.

And these comments are beyond frustrating. Guess what we aren't going to get every top Indiana recruit. I absolutely love that Crean has expanded to out of state, we would never have gotten players like Vic or Will. And now we have guys like Williams, Robinson, and Vonleh coming in. He has set up great connections out of state, as well as ones in state.
That said, I do agree with you that Tennessee was gaining real momentum. Just gained it at the wrong time.
When you go after big time players this happens.
There are plenty of other talented players IU is recruiting.
We have to understand that there are a lot of power programs located in neighboring states that have had much more success recently than IU.
Still lots and lots of time for 2014, and with Blackmon we have a genuinely elite shooter / scorer.
It's not much fun watching us come close but miss on Pinson (in particular), but IU was never Lyle's first choice, that's been clear for a long time now. And IU's interest and attention to Lyle went up and down, in turn.
Guys IU is in good position with (in addition to Exum) include Goodluck, A. Hill (who Crean / IU visited on the first day we could), Leron Black (climbing), Booth (though he likes Nova a lot) and others who are still emerging. Lots of time, and it's likely that all of IU's talented frosh will be back, depending mostly on what Vonleh does this season and what he wants to do next season.

IU's cupboard isn't exactly bare. Yogi, Sheehey, Hollowell, Gordon, and the 2013 class make for a very good roster next year and into the future.
Blackmon is ranked in the top 25 by ESPN.
Well living here in Evansville, I sure would have liked to seen JaQuan go to IU, just like Calbert!!
But L'ville and coach Pitino seems to have a nice E'ville connection. They had a nice player from Memorial H.S. a couple of years ago.....
As long as we have talent coming in that can help us win a national title, all is well.. We'll see..
As they say on to the next one.
This is a new year. A new beginning. And things will change.
But we have Blackmon, he's a quality recruit.
Still not sure whether I should be happy or not about not getting Lyle. Crazy amount of mixed reviews surrounding this kid. It will be interesting to see what he turns into at UOL.
Although it would be nice to have a top-5 class wrapped up, I can't help but think back to where this program was a few years ago and feel blessed to even have what we already have.
Zach is right about location. Can't be too far away from his posse, which is why it's better that he went elsewhere.
I'm pleased that he made the decision now and allowed IU to focus on other recruits. Only time till tell what kind of a recruit JL would have been, but he's done IU a real service by ending this early.
Never like to see top talent leave our state. In this case though, I'll make an exception.
Plenty of flags that don't represent the culture CTC/Staff have created in Bloomington. Players like Jordy, Yogi, Vic, Cody, Will...don't talk about what they do (twitter) but the show what they do by their actions (365 day guys).
Additionally..people talk about our misses in recruiting Indiana kids. Besides Cody, Yogi, Jeremy...I think JB Jr is one of the state's most unheralded recruits we've retained in quite awhile. His only downside is that he said yes early and didn't create the social media hype that others have. Love JB Jr's business like approach..you can tell the kid has had strong influences of the right kind in his ear. Personality wise...reminds me of Gary Harris.
Very true, good point. Kinda coincides with Oggy's post as well. Moreso in this situation, it seems to be better to look at the whole, big, picture rather than the immediate reaction.
Saw this posted in the ITH comments:
"It is a FACT that the kid is sporting a '13 Mustang w/ Personalized Plates. He lives with his Grandma - who doesn't have the financial resources to provide such amenities. If you can't see the issues bringing in a guy like that you're either an apologist, uninformed - or both."
Is anyone from Evansville able to confirm that?
Right now a lot hinges on Exum. If he commits then the staff can shift focus to 2015 for the most part since Dante is a sure-fire one and done and will open a scholly. I really think Dante would be a HUGE get for us, but it's an unusual situation with his background. I don't know how strong the state is for 2015, so it might be the time to expand the recruiting base beyond Indiana and DC region. Overall, it will be really interesting to see how the next couple of classes come together.
While I had a bit of a "be careful what you wish for" feeling about Lyle, I really think James Blackmon is a very special talent - THE ONE in his class that we need.
I'm glad he went elsewhere, now I don't have to worry about him causing issues or acting up during games.
If he thought he had better playing options at UL, that means we must have some pretty good players here already.(We already knew that)
