Interesting take on Watford vs. Smart

  • Josh Sanburn is a former IDS editor-in-chief. He's also now a writer for TIME. He authored a blogpost that I apparently missed until now, arguing that Watford's buzzer beater over Kentucky is bigger to IU than Keith Smart's shot to beat Syracuse, in part because, as Sanburn argues, "it wasn't supposed to happen."

It’s taken 12 years for Indiana fans to fully get over the Bob Knight era. No matter what happens on Friday in a rematch against No. 1 Kentucky, we’re finally saying goodbye to all that triumph and tumult, thanks to one remarkable three-pointer.

  • That's a tough call. However, I think you still have To go with Smart as the "shot" though.
Watford was important because it proved to the nation that Indiana was a force again.

Yea, I think Sanburn's argument was generational too, speaking to people more my age, who haven't known Indiana to have many of those moments or find that national relevancy in our lifetime (I was less than two months old when Smart hit that shot, for reference).

    Also: ref!

  • I was 18 months old when Smart's shot went through the net, but Watty's shot doesn't come close to Smart's. It's all about winning the Natty, and without that shot, we only have four banners.

  • I'll be the oldest now. Smart's shot more important but that's because of the stakes. Watford's shot huge though. One of my favorite memories in IU hoop and I can remember back to '75 team with Steve Green... Interesting article though
