Live thread -- IU vs. Ohio State (baseball)

  • We're in the bottom of the first right now, after Ohio State stranded two in the top half. Justin Cureton led off with a single and is now on first base.

Well, now Cureton is caught stealing, third time this year.

  • A walk also leads to nothing after a 6-4-3 GIDP by Sam Travis. End of one, no score.

  • Well now Ohio State strikes. David Corna hits a solo home run in the second, and then Kirby Pellant singles, moves up on an errant pick-off throw from Joey DeNato and scores on a double by Greg Solomon.

That's four hits and two runs in 1 1/3 innings for DeNato, who has been solid for most of the season as Indiana's rotation anchor.

2-0 Ohio State, one out in the second, runner on second.

  • And another single, from Tim Wetzel, scores Solomon from second. Wetzel goes to second on a poor throw home from Justin Cureton out in center.

  • DeNato works out of the jam with no further complication. 3-0 Buckeyes after 1 1/2.

  • And another Ohio State run. This one is a "cheap RBI double," as Jeremy Gray describes it to my right, and it's Corna again. DeNato sandwiched a single inside of groundouts to second, and then Corna floated a double into left field. Frankly, Will Nolden is a bit lucky in that designation. He broke terribly on the ball, read it wrong and missed the sliding catch by a matter of inches.

4-0 Ohio State now. And Pellant lines out to first. We're on to the bottom of the third.

  • Well, that's not good base running. Chris Sujka slaps a one-out single, moves up to second and scores on a single from Kyle Schwarber. Then Sam Travis nails an infield single off the third baseman's chest, but Schwarber somewhat inexplicably takes off on a swinging strike and ends up caught off second on the throw down for a 2-6 pickoff and the third out. Have to make more of opportunities to score off Ohio State starter Jaron Long, who has a 1.85 ERA on the season.

    4-1 Ohio State after three.

  • Throw in some bad base running from Ohio State. Greg Solomon bunted his way on but was out on an FC when Tim Wetzel's bunt rolled right back to DeNato, who tossed down to second for the out. Then Solomon, who was nearly picked off cleanly, got caught stealing by a pick-off move, and there are two outs in the top of the fourth.

  • Some baserunners but no runs in the fourth, and it's still 4-1 after 3 1/2.

  • Hoosiers waste a one-out hit from Dillon Dooney as he doesn't leave first base. Another runner stranded and it's 4-1 OSU after four.

  • And it's 5-1. Brad Hallberg just slammed a home run to left field.

Indiana's lucky it's not 6-1. Buckeyes had a runner on first and DeNato's last pitch went straight into the dirt. Catcher Kyle Schwarber dug it out of the dirt and threw the runner out at second. Next pitch, home run.

Nobody up in the bullpen, but DeNato has not been at all sharp today.

    Zach Osterman

  • And now Matt Dearden and Walker Stadler are both getting up in the bullpen.

Zach Osterman // IU Athletics beat reporter // Follow me on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ZachOsterman

    Zach Osterman

  • Dearden in after DeNato gives up another hit. That's 11 for him on the day, plus two walks. He'll only go 4 1/3 today. It has been a rough month for the normally stellar left-hander.

Zach Osterman // IU Athletics beat reporter // Follow me on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ZachOsterman

    Zach Osterman

  • Dearden strikes out Solomon after a stolen base moves the runner to second, so no more damage. To the bottom of the fifth, with the Buckeyes up 5-1.

  • Now Indiana has something going. Tim O'Conner worked a 1-2 count into a walk, and Justin Cureton and Kyle Schwarber follow that up with singles.

Sam Travis about to step in. One out, so the double play is on at every base. Travis has hit into one already.

And so it is. Another 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Travis, and a bases-loaded opportunity is sufficiently thrown away.

    5-1 Buckeyes after five.

We come back to Long's 1.85 ERA coming into play today. Indiana has seven hits off the Ohio State starter, but just one run. Can't waste chances to touch him up.

  • Now Ohio State is humming again. Infield hit and a throwing error (a pretty bad one, actually) from Dearden have runners and first and second with no outs.

    Zach Osterman

  • And a single up the middle plates another run. 6-1. Stadler back up in the bulllpen.

Zach Osterman // IU Athletics beat reporter // Follow me on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ZachOsterman

    Zach Osterman

  • One more scores off Stadler on a mix-up between Johnson and Basil on a ball hit up the middle, but then Stadler plays a grounder up his face for a 1-6-3 DP.

    7-1 Buckeyes after 5 1/2.

    Zach Osterman

  • Make it 8-1 now. Indiana went scoreless again in the bottom of the sixth, and now runners at the corners with two outs. This one looks quite beyond reach.

Zach Osterman // IU Athletics beat reporter // Follow me on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ZachOsterman

    Zach Osterman

  • Indiana won't go away too emptied-handed. Dustin DeMuth pulls a homer to right field, his first career long ball at IU.

Zach Osterman // IU Athletics beat reporter // Follow me on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ZachOsterman

    Zach Osterman

  • OK well now there's a Hoosier at every base after O'Conner and Sujka single and Cureton gets hit by a pitch. Looks like Long's day is over.

Zach Osterman // IU Athletics beat reporter // Follow me on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ZachOsterman

    Zach Osterman

  • First-pitch opposite-field double clears the bases, and it's now 8-5. Hmmmmm.

Zach Osterman // IU Athletics beat reporter // Follow me on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ZachOsterman

    Zach Osterman

  • And Long says goodbye after six innings. Sam Travis up with Schwarber on second, and the submarine-throwing right-hander David Fathalikhani is on the mound. A passed ball moves Schwarber to third.
