OPEN THREAD: OLYMPICS

  • I'm a volleyball guy myself — watching the live streams right now, actually. And I know there are plenty of soccer and hoops fans on here. But there are plenty of other sports, too. Hell, IU has someone competing in the modern pentathlon. Feel free to post any musings about the 2012 games on this here thread. There's definitely some great competition to come.

Watching some #USWNT at present. At the Olympics, T&F is my preferred sporting event but I'll watch darned near everything (let's go Men's Archery!)

They said this team beat Croatia 105-52 or something like that a couple weeks back. USA is definitely not looking like a "best by far" team right now. Even Geno looks confused.

Apparently there was a HUGE upset in men's archery today. USA beat South Korea, the heavy favorite to win it all. They're into the gold medal match against the Italians.

  • And by the way, Orianica Velasquez of IU women's soccer is playing against the U.S. national women's soccer team right now. She's on the front line as her team tries to battle back from a 1-0 deficit against the Americans.

  • You all want to watch some good volleyball? U.S. vs. South Korea right now. High level defense from the Americans, but the Koreans are putting on a great run now.

  • As I say that, defense has fallen off tremendously for the USA. They're in the right spots most of the time, just not getting good touches on the ball. Kim Yeon-Koung (S. Korea) has been getting a high volume of the sets, and unlike the last two phases of the match, she's putting them away. USA 2-1 S. Korea now in a best-of-five set match.

  • Alright, I was discussing this with my family, and I can't seem to find a proper answer: Anybody know the rules for handball?

Strange sport. Also, if any of you missed the U.S. – Serbia men's volleyball game today, it's worth looking up on the stream. Great display of athleticism and domination by the Americans, who are favorites for Gold.

Good volleyball is always fun to watch. Fast-paced, very technical and super-athletic. Of course, I'm biased there, so take it for what it's worth.

In some other big news, Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps will both be in the men's 400 freestyle relay final. Phelps will run second with Lochte as the anchor. The competition has been called "the best 400 free relay field ever," and the race could be at a record pace.

  • I just became a big fan of water polo. USA vs. Hungary was an amazing contest, one of the most exciting things I've seen yet in these games, and it also happens to be the first time I've watched the sport.

I'm planning on watching the mystery that is handball, too, after reading this story from Bill Simmons of Grantland:

Losing one's Olympic and handball virginity in one fell swoop - Grantland

When everything at the Olympics is a long walk away, you tend to find yourself sucked into whatever sport is next to you.
