OT: how do the Pacers matchup with the Heat?

  • Obviously, neither series is over yet, but assuming both Indiana and Miami advance to the second round, how do the Pacers matchup with the Heat? I like the fact that the Pacers have some athleticism and depth on the wings, so they may be able to make LeBron and Wade a little more uncomfortable than other teams can.

  • Bring on the Heat. They don't care about match ups they will shut them down.

I haven't watched the Pacers as much as I'd like since they aren't on national TV that much. Is Granger generally the go-to guy down the stretch? And is he the one that will be guarding LeBron?

Pretty much with Granger. I really like Paul George though. I wasnt very high on him when they drafted him but he is a solid contributor

Yeah, George definitely gives them another option on the wing. It'll be interesting to see what line up Miami plays against the Pacers. If they go small and play Bosh at center, Hibbert needs to have a huge series. The "centers" Miami has on the bench are all flawed in some way, so if those guys are on the court, the Pacers need to expose them on both ends of the floor.

Speaking of the Hawks, this is a bit of a tangent, but I'd completely forgotten that they selected Marvin Williams in the same draft as - and ahead of - Deron Williams and Chris Paul. Every team has its fair share of bad decisions, though. For example, the Celtics traded away Joe Johnson less than 50 games into his career.

Absolutely. I thought it was a little cruel for them to bring that up on the broadcast when the game was already out of hand, pouring salt in the wounds of Hawks fans.

Hand to my heart, I was heartbroken the day we drew the No. 2 overall pick in the '05 draft. I knew Billy Knight, who was then the GM, would succumb to public pressure and his own failings and take either Bogut or Williams, neither of whom I wanted or we needed.

I desperately wanted Chris Paul. Saw him mature over two seasons at Wake Forest and thought he would be an absolute stud. Plus that Hawks team would have matured so differently with a point guard who was worth anything. Remember, that was right at the beginning of the Joe Johnson era in Atlanta, and Josh Smith and Josh Childress were both still exceptionally young. Putting a point guard of Paul's caliber onto that team would have been brilliant.

Ugh, it makes me ill to talk about it even now.

It's OK. All 27 of us had turned the game off by that point anyway. No worries.

Wow, I'd forgotten about Childress - he was a heck of a player too. That really would have made everyone else's job easier if Paul had been there, as Johnson wouldn't have had to dominate the ball so much and Smith would get the ball more often in the right place at the right time. They're already a very dangerous team when they can get up and down, and would have been even scarier with Paul there in addition to what they have now.

  • I'm just saying, watching the Bulls get whipped by the 76ers and knowing D-Rose and Luol Deng will be out until about January of next year is equally as depressing, seeing as they're title contenders otherwise.

I don't know the whole story there, but I'd be pretty upset if I'm the Bulls and Deng decides to postpone his surgery until after the Olympics. I would assume there's something in his contract giving the team some power there, right?

Deng has said he wants to postpone, and the Bulls haven't exerted any pull against that as of yet. You'd hope they do, though, because the franchise will be missing its No. 1 player and then its next-best scoring option from the wing. I'm sure they understand how badly Deng wants to represent in the Olympics, but your livelihood should take precedence.

Yeah, if I'm the team paying him, I'm taking control in this situation. As soon as the Olympic team wants to pay his salary, he can do whatever they want. My guess is that the organization is treading lightly right now in an effort to avoid a PR nightmare as much as possible. Ultimately, though, I'd be very surprised if they let him go through with that.

lol There are a few teams in NBA history that were great, but just came around at the wrong time. If the Hawks had had that exact same roster from the late 80's five or six years later, they could have been a legit contender and possibly won a title. But when the Hawks had their best teams, the East was stacked with Detroit, Chicago and Boston all playing at a very high level.

  • Great win for the Pacers last night, and that'll buy them at least an extra day to prepare for the Heat.

And give credit to the Hawks for making big shots down the stretch to survive another day. Horford's tough, and really brings another dimension to that team. Should be a great game Thursday night.

Sad but totally true. That team, for its era, was one more half-decent player away.

Love Horford. Have since he joined the team. To me he's their best player. I feel ill when I see Joe Johnson dribbling the ball around.

Definitely. Would have been interesting to see how the 90's Bulls would have fared in the mid/late-80's. I know Jordan was there in the mid/late-80's, but they weren't as complete of a team, and Phil wasn't coaching them yet. And vice-versa - would the Bulls have won six titles if they had to go through the late-80's Hawks?

I agree with you about both of those guys. When they move the ball and attack the basket, they're tough to defend. But when they go into iso mode with Johnson, they're much easier to guard. He makes some amazing plays at times, but he usually can't keep that up over the course of an entire game.
