Reports: IU to hire Johnson

According to multiple Internet reports, Indiana is finalizing a deal to bring in Towson assistant Kenny Johnson to fill the vacant spot on its staff.

  • Still torn on this, as I think we all wanted Calbert. That said, if he didn't want it, there isn't much you can do. If this guy can keep us in contention with top talent out east, I will be very pleased.

I think it's probably realistic to believe Cheaney didn't want the job. It's also understandable if he didn't. He's still fairly recently retired, he's new to coaching so he doesn't necessarily need to jump straight at the first assistant's job he's offered and he probably doesn't need the money (also not like director of basketball ops is a terrible gig pay-wise either).

Tom Crean basically said the job was Cheaney's if he wanted it, so I take the Johnson news to mean he didn't.

Also important to note this isn't a hire just for Beejay Anya. Indiana has routinely looked to the mid-Atlantic area for talent, and the D.C. area in particular. Kenny Johnson opens a lot of doors in that region, not just now but in the future overall.

  • great players don't always make great coaches. if calbert wanted it he would have had it. this guy can big a big big east recruiter......

Run the ball. Stop the run. You win, or lose, up front.

  • Pat Skerry, the head coach at Towson, just tweeted as well that Kenny Johnson is on his way to Indiana. So basically, everyone in the world but Indiana that could legitimately confirm that this is happening has done so. Here's part of what Skerry tweeted:

"He helped lay a strong foundation this year and will do great things at IU."

So yea, it now appears all over but the crying (or in this case, confirming and introducing to the world, presumably via press conference).

  • No way this wasn't CC's job IF he wanted it..have to believe he didn't.

It was if he did. I think the time commitment was probably the biggest factor. Realistically, Cheaney didn't need to view this as a make-or-break hire. His coaching career has plenty of time to develop.
