Sides address Crean/Meyer incident

Less than a day after a postgame argument between IU coach Tom Crean and Michigan assistant Jeff Meyer went viral, it was still a primary topic of discussion.

  • No indication as to what set it in motion in the first place?

No, nothing public. I think there have been some tight recruiting battles in the past, but that's not uncommon in the Big Ten, obviously.

  • Zach, I've seen others suggest that recruiting between the staffs has been a source of tension but I'm stuggling to think of which players the two schools have battled for. IU offered Irvin way back when but by the time he committed to UM, IU already had Davis and Hartman on board and couldn't possibly have still coveted Irvin, right? IU didn't recruit McGarry in any meaningful way for the 2012 class. Was Yogi's recruitment a source of contention between the two staffs?

  • Crean is out of control. He confronted Aaron Craft over nothing. He is Bobby times 10. He will self destruct

  • Crean should stop and realize that without Sampson and Meyers he probably would have the Indiana job in the first place... doh!

Knight times 10? Please. I have no problem with people calling out Crean for this incident but the idea that he's "out on control' is ridiculous. That's pure message board nonsense.

I'm a Buckeye but I thought Crean's comments to Aaron Craft were way out of line, if not "out of control". I'm quoting from a Lee Caryer sports247 article: After Ohio State defeated Indiana in Bloomington March 5, while the teams were exhibiting sportsmanship by shaking hands, Crean told Aaron Craft something like, “You need to show respect for Indiana basketball. Remember, I have votes for conference honors and I can get you.”

Threatening a player with his vote for all-conference honors is inappropriate by any standard. In any case, despite NOT being voted to the all-conference team by coaches like Crean, Craft did win the outstanding player award at the B1G TEN Tournament in a direct rebuke to coaches like Crean.

In addition, in the same thread, there is a comment: " I have also heard that referees have noticed Crean has trouble with self-control. When I hit Tom Crean on a search engine I found an article by Seth Davis to the effect that Crean has a problem of losing himself in competition - games and recruiting were mentioned - and that he wants to address it. It is a conference responsibilty to help him grow-up."

Although I virtually always vote for B1G TEN teams when they play against non-conference opponents, classless Crean presents a dilemma. Hopefully, he will get himself under control and represent the B1G TEN admirably with class in the forthcoming NCAA tournament. Right now, Indiana represents the B1G TEN's best opportunity for a national championship and I'm sure the entire B1G TEN is rooting for them as long as Crean doesn't "jerk-off" inappropriately in the national spotlight. One can win with class !

I'm sorry but I'm a little spektical of these "reports" and the things that people on OSU message boards "have heard". I think Crean can reasonably be criticized for the Meyer incident, but I'm not going to lose sleep over message board reports that he wasn't nice enough to Aaron Craft. I also have to say that the idea that OSU fans could come on here and lecture IU about winning with class is rich. I believe we heard a lof of sanctimonious, holier than thou nonsense from Tressell over the years, and the truth turned out to be a lot uglier.
