Tom Crean radio show open thread (FREE, as always)

  • We are here. The crowd is here. Tom Crean is here. Things get rolling shortly.

  • Fischer opens with Butler, asks Crean if film gave him different viewpoint.

"No, not really. ... We played very hard, we were very competitive. It was a very competitive game."

Says IU "settled for too many pull-up jump shots." Says Butler wants opponents to do that, and "that only works if you let them."

"They won the layup game, and we knew that was gonna be an important part of the game. The bottom line is we didn't get enough of the rebounds at either end of the floor that we needed to get."

Also says defensive communication wasn't up to snuff.

  • "You've got to make sure" you communicate everything, Crean says, especially defensively. Says Indiana did a poor job of it too often in second half and overtime. Also says he wishes he'd gone to the bench more, though he follows up "not at the end of the game."

"Nobody was tired physically, but we probably lost our edge communication-wise," Crean says of not being able to steal a few more minutes for guys.

  • "It was key rebounds. It was loose rebounds. Too many layups, too many things that turned into easy baskets for them, and then we didn't make up for that, because we took too many pull-up jump shots."

I think you can make out what he's talking about there.

  • Crean makes a rather backhanded comment about the IU fans dominating ticket sales and seats, and the other three schools in the event getting equal shares of revenue, so they should be "happy" about that. This came in a sequence talking about the atmosphere of Purdue and Notre Dame fans jumping on the Butler bandwagon.

    Zach Osterman

  • Says there was "a lot of contact" in the Butler game, that IU didn't always play well through it like it needed to.

  • Fischer brings up IU's new No. 6 ranking.

"It's really not how I perceive it or look at it. I've never had a vote, and frankly would never agree to be a voter if I were asked. ... Rankings are nice. There's no question the No. 1 ranking was fantastic as we started the season, but then you go into it, and you're just playing games."

"It has nothing to do with how we're practicing, nor did it before."

  • On Perea: "Extremely pleased with how he practiced today. And it's going to take a little time for him ... just getting that game speed, game recognition, game speed on defense ... that's going to take a little time."

Says he is an "energy giver."

  • Crean on Yogi Ferrell's big three: "That won't be his last one, and it won't be his first one. ... He's got great awareness. He's got something special about him."

    Zach Osterman

  • More on Ferrell: "He's an excellent shooter. Just getting confident with the college speed of the game."

Again, not surprising to those who've seen him play in high school and AAU.

  • Crean asked about Catholic 7. Says a lot of things, including loving the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden. Says he also feels bad for Cincinnati, UConn.

  • Crean then asked about Big Ten expansion. Repeats the same refrain about recruiting, and wanting to play on the East Coast for the sake of alumni bases out that way. Says New York is the second-biggest alumni base outside of Indiana (Chicago being No. 1), which is odd, because he said that about Atlanta in March.

  • Tom Crean challenges the crowd to raise its energy level. They do. Moving on.

  • Crean asked about player reaction to loss: "They were down. There;s no question about that. And it's not like I walked into the locker room and" tried to comfort them.

"I think in the last few days, the resolve has come back."

"There is nobody who was masking how they were."

Says IU has responded well in practice: "I'm not gonna single anybody out as leaders, because I think no matter who you are, you need to show" leadership, but he expects some unnamed people on his team as guys he expects to step up.

  • Crean asked generally about having to make sure players aren't committing intentional fouls when they mean to foul, says his team works on learning to foul cleanly but clearly in those situations.

"We're not gonna teach going for the face."

    Hmmm ...

  • Billy from Terre Haute calls. Crean asks if he used to live in Vincennes. Indeed he did. A period of catching up ensues, including some thoughts on where Billy and his fiancee might go on their upcoming honeymoon.

He suggests French Lick, Vegas, Florida or the Bahamas.

    Zach Osterman

  • Crean asked if he likes not having the target of No. 1 anymore. Says he doesn't think IU lost because of pressure.

"I learned a long time ago, you can learn just as much from winning as you do from losing, if you really pay attention during winning."

  • Crean says Crossroad Classic will come back next year, contract is signed. Says "it's a great event," and again reiterates that it's good for the other schools that get an even cut of ticket sales. Says he's still not thrilled with result, even if it was a great game for the neutral.

"I;d have had a different viewpoint if we'd have won the game, because we didn't play great."

  • Caller asks about Elston, and then he also asks about an Elston shot last year after which he made a really silly face that this caller now emulates when he thinks someone needs cheering up.

Crean does not remember the face. Now caller is explaining it. Oh boy.

Anyway, on Elston's status: "He's close. He warmed up the other day. He warmed up hard. I knew we weren't really gonna be able to play him. ... He's very limited in terms of his practice time. ... There is a possibility he could play this week. I wouldn't call it a probability, but it's a possibility."

  • Crean asked about shiny shoes like the ones UCLA wore in New York. Says they're really popular on the AAU circuit, but he says "I wouldn't put my son in them, let alone would I put my team in them." So yea, no glow-in-the-dark red shoes.

  • Allison from Bloomington has a manager question, but then talks about her dinner. And then she asks if Crean would bring in a female manager.

Crean says he had female managers at Marquette.

"We've never said never on that, and that'd be something" he would consider.

  • Crean's last question is on using smaller balls and lower rims for young players. Says he likes smaller balls, because it helps them work on controlling a smaller physical object.

  • He finishes with Mount St. Mary's thoughts, and Florida Atlantic ...

Says MSM is the only game with tickets left for it. Says they have a new coach from VCU, are "very much like VCU."

"They're a fun team to watch on tape." Says his guys are pumped to just play again.

FAU is coached by Mike Jarvis and will be on ESPN, and Crean thinks "that will be fun."

    And now we are done.
