Trey Lyles re-opens his recruitment

  • According to Arsenal Tech head coach Jason Delaney, Trey Lyles has backed out of his commitment to the Hoosiers. Here's the full text of Delaney's tweet:

@CoachDelaney Trey Lyles has decided to open his recruitment. He loves IU & it is still #1 but he would like to have something to compare.

In other words, IU isn't out of the picture, but it's still an intriguing move. More to come.

  • Usually not a good sign but still plenty of time here

OldOaken247 on twitter..... I say a lot of stuff you wont care about.

  • Just saw this. I am incredibly surprised. I understand he is a top talent, which makes something like this much more likely, but still did not see it coming.

Not all that sure how things play out from here. I would expect Crean to still heavily recruit him. So did something go wrong, or is he just a top recruit who is flattered by hear from Cal and Roy?

  • He's no doubt been worked hard by other coaches during the AAU games. Probably not a bad idea for him to look around..and after next year..he may change his mind. Schools run the risk for decomits when they offer kids so young..I mean why not take the five free trips to other elite schools and see what's up. After watching that game he played in last night..the kid has unlimited potential...but seemed lost in the offensive scheme the coach was running (whatever that was) Disappointing for IU fans..but Crean will do his job on this..wonder if Coach was taken by surprise...or exactly WHAT changed Trey's mind. He did not look good enuff last night to be a "one and done":..but he's got two years to develop what looks to be real talent.

As some have pointed out on Twitter, I do think Lyles should be commended for being formal and forward in this. Plenty of prospects insist they're solid and then flip anyway. Lyles was up front about all this. That should be worth something.

On the topic of his potential: I absolutely believe he is a one-and-done type of talent by the time he reaches college, but that's obviously still a ways away. I don't think he's far from that kind of impact right now though.

  • So what is the track record of top 10 players like this decomitting? Most of them go elsewhere? Can't think of a ton off the top of my head. Austin Rivers. Can you think of guys that actually ended up staying with their original commitment? I don't see this ending well for IU fans

It's not too good. Obviously, the direct comparison here is Eric Gordon, who was committed to Illinois but wound up flipping to IU.

It really is too early at this point to know anything. I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but that's just the case.

I can say this: Based on some information I've gotten tonight, I would expect things to start moving quickly for Lyles in a number of different ways. I can't elaborate on that (and please, please understand that that's not referring to his recruitment or to a commitment date or anything like that), but just keep that advisory in mind, I guess.

Sorry, I know that's really cryptic. I apologize.

  • I really hope IU fans on twitter don't attack the young man. Also are there any rumblings about Blackmons scholarship not being legit, due to injury??

  • He will get plenty of hate via twitter. Going to happen with any passionate fan base even though it is wrong

Re: Blackmon: No, that's not the case.

As for the hate, social media is an unfortunately useful tool for people lacking the conscience to see right from wrong, particularly in the case of a 16-year-old. It's especially surprising to me when a player openly says he wants to keep his formerly committed school in the process, and yet its fans still attack him on Twitter, Facebook, etc. Just never ceases to amaze.
