  • "i have to thank todd van poppel tonight." haha

great ceremony. the loudest ovation of the night, at least it sounded that way through a computer, was for martin prado. awesome of chipper to recognize him and some guys in the dbacks dugout. damn i miss prado. juptron better get it going, and hopefully now he realizes who he was traded for, what we gave up to get him. i wouldnt mind if prado hit a couple homers tonight, as long as we lead after the 9th.

  • julio teheran for president of colombia.

uggla is hitting .271 over the past 21 games. his batting line is now a somewhat respectable .202/.327/.401/.727. i'm floored, maybe my long term frustration with him has blinded me to any progress he might make. he, jhey and bossman are all picking it up. 'uh oh', says the rest of the national league. now we need juptron to join em...

    Brandon Beachy‏ @Brandon_Beachy
Proud of Braves fans tonight! The turnout, support for Chip, backing Julio and the ovations for Martin that gave me the chills. Well done!

Uggla has hit.271 with a .843 OPS in his past 21 games. He's now hitting .202. First time his BA has been above .200 since May 10.

so many great pics of tonight that i wish i could copy & paste here. hopefully the couple i'm attempting to link will show up.

  • Yes sir, that's the site. Speaking of which, that's a really cool website...I could spend hours on there looking at random things.

  • I was on a little vacation this week, so I didn't get to watch any games. However, lately he's been flying up those rankings. He's now at 3.1, which places him t-123rd.

Pretty damn ridiculous when you consider he hasn't even played half a season quite yet. To think of all the players that have played the game, and he's already that high is remarkable.

  • moylan optioned to aaa and francoeur designated for assignment, a day after hinske designated for assignment. prado not hitting well, hanson not pitching well. on the bright side for former braves, francisco is heating up in milwaukee. jurrjens just called up to the orioles pen.

  • a ton of good info in bowman's most recent blog: http://markbowman.mlblogs.com/2013/07/03/will-kimbrel-be-atlantas-only-all-star-selection/. he backs up with advanced stats what i've been thinking for a while, the top 4 in the order should be jhey - simba - ff - juptron. followed by bmac - johnson - uggla - bossman.
johnson has to slow down sometime but he's yet to do so, with a current batting line of .330/.377/.480/.856. freeman is right there with him at .310/.384/.474/.858.

  • I can't read the post here at work, any site with 'blog' in the URL is blocked, but no way should Simba be batting second. It should be a no brainer to switch BJ and Simmons in that lineup.

Both players have posted similar lines on the year: .176/.277/.316 for BJ, .242/.280/.339 for Simmons. The difference in Batting Average is balanced out by the fact that BJ has twice as many walks. But looking at the stats for the full year hides the fact that both players' seasons are trending in very different directions.

In June, BJ batted .238/.359/.452. Simmons batted just .225/.268/.267. One month is a small sample, to be sure, but those numbers for BJ aren't far off from his career line of .250/.332/.415. I'm optimistic about my sports teams, I know, but it seems reasonable to expect a similar performance going forward. If Upton can keep it up, give me the OBP that's almost 100 points higher, please. In fact, I'd bat Upton leadoff right now, with Heyward second and Simmons eighth.

  • simba has 2-hole written all over him. he's a better hitter than his current stats say. his minor league career batting line is .299/.352/.397/.749. as a rookie last year he hit .289/.335/.416/.751. he's young and still developing, going through a common sophomore slump right now thats heavily influenced by being placed at leadoff, a role with a ton of pressure attached to it and much different than any other spot in the order, designed for a particular hitter. at leadoff you want a guy, preferrably a speedster, who works the count and is capable in a variety of methods of getting on base. in the 2-hole you want a cerebral line drive hitter, professional opposite field approach, great at moving runners over, some power but not his concentration. thats simba, and he's produced when given opportunities there, batting .313/.328/.391/.719 in 68 plate appearances. 68 sounds insignificant but he's accumulated only 528 pa's in his major league career, which isnt even a true full season. in the bigs he's seen the most time at 1st, 2nd, 7th and 8th. his stats in 2nd, 7th and 8th are much better than at leadoff. like i said he's young and still developing, and imo it's wise to let him develop in the spot that suits his approach best. if fredi doesnt want to place him there then put him 7th or 8th, leadoff clearly isnt working. i think he wants to though, managers have access to the advanced stats we see on baseball-reference and keep them on tabs, and he's probably waiting for a losing streak to change it up. you dont alter things while you're winning.

i wouldnt be upset with bossman in the 2-hole. what we've seen from him this year suggests his approach is the polar opposite of what you want up there but his career batting line says different. he's hit .267/.345/458/.804 in 886 plate appearances in the 2-hole. it's actually his best spot. now that he's picked it up, not a bad idea to give it a try. have to keep in mind, however, his elite seasons in 2007 and 08 contribute to that, and he's been an average to below average hitter in his past four seasons. i still wouldnt put him up there, at least not my first choice. he wants to hit the ball to the fence every time, has a power approach that belongs in a run producing spot. he's looked anything but a top of the order hitter this year. think simba's the better option until he proves otherwise.

Ron Helmer: "Everyone says you should hate Purdue. I dont. I just feel sorry for them." I'm with Ron.

  • Bats were busted out tonight, finally. Gonna put an end to the 3-game skid, thankfully!

  • BTW, did anyone watch the game last night? I did not, but I read an article on Yahoo talking about how bad Angel Hernandez was (of course, he's always garbage). Apparently, the game between the Phillies and Braves was trending on twitter in Minneapolis it was so bad!

I'd enjoy hearing a first-hand assessment if anyone can provide one...

  • Had a fun time for 4th of July game....We've had rain every day for a week straight now...Ugh.

Fireworks show was surprisingly good afterwards, despite the loss....

  • Baseball is such a funny game. Marlins retire 24 straight batters from the 6th-13th inning before giving up 6 runs in the 14th to the Braves. Tip of the cat to the pen for giving the offense a chance to finally break out.

  • That map is cool as hell. In Gibson County, Puig had 55%. My best friend voted for Puig at least 50 times he said, so I'll be sure and kick him in the nuts next time I see him.

I assume ESPN has accounted for the game tonight, but Simmons' DWAR is now a blistering 3.3. That places him tied for 84th on the all-time single-season list.

Oh, and congrats to Freddie! 3 hits and 4 RBIs tonight make the voting public look intelligent!

  • Well guys I've finally made the trek over to the new site. New location in The Ville, same Swag. We've been without internet almost a month so what little Braves watching I could do was completely gone.

A couple of thoughts...glad to have the team we do with all the injuries we've had to face. I'm so glad we've gotten the real Brian McCann back even for a season. The world was introduced to Yoenis Cespedes and the A's should have had more than 2 guys in the All Star Game. And finally, there wasn't a better moment than Mo Rivera jogging in to the familiar Enter Sandman in Citi Field. There can't be a classier guy than Mo Rivera. And probably the only guy that could have worn the number 42. And with the Yankees showing their age, it is probably the last time we'll see him on that kind of stage.

    #Braves searching for a left-handed reliever http://wp.me/p1rXST-8YjX

i predict right now we trade maholm for russell + prospect. rotation looks like: minor, huddy, meds/beachy, teheran, wood. bullpen: kimbrel, avilan, russell, meds/beachy, walden, varvaro, carpenter. best pitching in the game gets upgraded.

Ron Helmer: "Everyone says you should hate Purdue. I dont. I just feel sorry for them." I'm with Ron.

  • Avilan has been great but I knew they would need another lefty for the pen. Wood could start or relieve but the club is going to make sure he can't start before they put him in the pen. It's not a huge deal but I'm not a huge fan of Russell but his numbers against lefties are too good to ignore. That Bowman article is the first news I've heard about Ramiro Pena being done for the year. Tough break for Ramiro. I love his game. He just needs every day AB's.
